Albany diner history: the Miss Albany Diner

Albany's most famous diner building no longer serves diner food. The Miss Albany Diner at 893 Broadway is a prefabricated Art Deco diner built in 1941 by the Silk City Diners division of the Paterson Vehicle Company in New Jersey. It first operated as Lil's Diner and later ran under several names, including Elaine's, the Firehouse Diner and the Street Car Diner.

In 1986 it was restored as a principal location for the film Ironweed, based on William Kennedy's novel and starring Jack Nicholson and Meryl Streep, and renamed the Miss Albany Diner for the shoot. The name echoes a chain of Miss Albany Diners that operated in the city in the 1920s. Cliff and Jane Brown bought the diner in 1988 and kept the name, and it was added to the National Register of Historic Places on November 6, 2000. It served its last meal as a diner in February 2012, and in 2015 it reopened as Tanpopo Ramen and Sake Bar.

Tips for visiting diners around Albany

  • Weekend mornings are the busiest. Arrive early on Saturday and Sunday, or go on a weekday.
  • Need a bar? The Gateway Diner has a full bar.
  • Late night: Bob's Diner in Watervliet is the reliable 24-hour option in the area.
  • Confirm hours before you go. Online listings for several of these diners disagree, especially on closing times.
